The Scorpionian Type
Evolved Type
The kingdom of Scorpio is
a kingdom of power. His highest achievement is the
manifestation of that power in the most gigantic of
tasks - absolute self-mastery. The destruction of
egotism, the domination of desire, the abolition of
everything that can retard his moral, mental, and
physical regeneration; the attainment of complete
control over the will, intellect, passions, emotions,
bodily activities, and psychic faculties - there are, or
ought to be, his ambitions, and very frequently, in
spite of false starts, failures, and shortcomings, he
makes considerable progress on the way to realizing
them. Further, he not only desires rapid progress for
himself, but craves it also for others, and gives freely
of his own magnificent vitality to hasten their
development. It is this characteristic that draws so
many of this sign into the medical profession, and makes
astrologers refer to it as pre-eminently the physician's
sign.
When the ideal doctor - who may stand very well for the
ideal Scorpionian - enters the sickroom, the first
impression he gives is that of power, a quiet, resolute
strength and a capacity and determination to overcome
suffering, disease, and death. Such a man can impress
his will on the most fractious and rebellious of
patients.
Scorpionians are generally more or less psychic, but
often fail to realize it. They make such exceptionally
good use of their sense of perceptions that they
attribute their achievements in rapid diagnosis and
other kinds of detective work entirely to quickness and
accuracy of observation, in which they know that they
excel over the majority of men. As a rule, too, their
psychism is of a healthy and normal type, and allows its
possessors to sense their finer impressions intuitively
and without effort, rarely disturbing them by
disconcerting and incomprehensible glimpses into the
unseen world. Doctors who feel inclined to disclaim such
powers should ask themselves candidly how often they
have diagnosed a difficult case correctly before
definite and recognizable symptoms have appeared, or how
often they have had premonitions of sudden summons to
cases which, as far as outward knowledge went, seemed
independent of their aid; or even been impelled to go to
them just in the very nick of time.
Besides striving to conquer death and disease,
Scorpionians find intense satisfaction in dominating the
forces of nature - for the benefit of mankind. They
excel as practical engineers, and long before they have
learned to show patience and forbearance, will display
these qualities to and admirable extent when called upon
to deal with a refractory piece of machinery. Though
rarely quite original in their work, they are clever in
utilizing other people's ideas of a more daringly
inventive turn, apparently finding stimulus and
inspiration in the very difficulties that has checkmated
their predecessors. Anything that calls for strenuous
effort, heroic endurance, and the breaking down of
opposition and obstacles is congenial to them. Their
analytical methods and power of criticism stand them in
good stead in many walks of life, and some do
brilliantly at the bar, usually making their way to the
front by their success in dealing with criminal cases.
The intense virility of this type naturally makes it
somewhat difficult for women born under it to accept the
limitations and restrictions imposed by their sex, and
most of them regret that they were not born men. The
female native has an intense and very natural scorn for
the type of woman who shirks matrimony and motherhood,
and if cut off from these possibilities herself is often
at a loss as to how to employ her energies, for her
desire to dominate cannot be altogether held in check.
The power of concentrating on whatever work is taken up
makes Scorpionian women the best housekeepers and cooks
of all. Every corner in their domain is kept spotless.
Dinners are served to the minute, piping hot, and
nothing is ever presented burned, or underdone, or
otherwise spoiled by careless cookery. Their spring
cleaning is their annual holiday. The harder the task,
the more these people seem to rise to it.
Love and Friendship
In love and friendship
Scorpionians tend to be intense and distinctly
exclusive, and are prone to sudden and strong
antipathies and likings. They despise gush and
sentimentality, dislike demonstration of all kinds, and
often find much difficulty in expressing their inner
thoughts and feelings even when they desire to do so -
which is rarely, for they are taciturn and laconic by
nature, and exceedingly reserved. When deeply moved,
however, their feelings find utterance, and they are
then apt to say more than the occasion might warrant;
for the Scorpionian has a sting to its tail. Sometimes,
though more or less tongue-tied, they have their pens
well under control, and write delightful letters -
terse, pungent, and abounding in detail and humor.
Scorpionians - especially the women - are not easily
mated, and are apt to prove exacting and quite difficult
to live with. Strong and efficient themselves, it is
almost impossible for them to make full allowance for
the shortcomings of others, or to understand why
natures, dispositions, temperaments, and ideals should
differ so widely. Geminians are especially trying to
their nerves. They mate best among themselves, or with
Cancerians, who resemble them in intensity and excel
them in sympathy and imagination; for in spite of their
passionate tendencies Scorpionians can be unrelentingly
stern, especially where principle is involved. They are
in little danger of wrecking their lives through rash
engagements or hasty and ill-considered marriages; and
though their personal magnetism may attract many,
especially those of weak or vacillating character, they
will probably find no difficulty in administering a
rebuff which, in such cases, may be the truest kindness.
They very often recognize the future husband or wife at
first sight and seldom waver in the matter, though they
rarely confide their hopes or intentions to friends or
relatives until everything is practically arranged.
Religion
The great masters and
founders of religion have been healers, and in early
times the offices of pries and physician were one. It is
often an eminently devout impulse that carries the
Scorpionian into the medical profession. He is seldom an
irreligious man, though his uncompromising tendency may
make him shock orthodoxy by claiming to be considered
so. Further, though he often abandons his childhood
faith, he rarely gets quite out of touch with ideas
impressed upon him by the teachers and thinkers he
reverenced the most during the period of his early
manhood, and in later years will surprise the younger
generation by the extraordinary rigidity of his beliefs.
His chief demand upon dogma is that there should be no
sickly sentimentality about it. He prefers it to be
bracing and virile in quality.
Literary Style and Religion
The list of Scorpionians
who have distinguished themselves in literature is long,
and their "hallmark" is strength and vitality of style.
One of their characteristics is courage in tackling
difficult subjects.
Goethe, Milton, and Victor Hugo (born respectively with
the Sun in Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) are three of
the intellectual giants born with Scorpio rising. Martin
Luther, a great "destroyer and regenerator," was
strongly under Scorpio's influence, his horoscope
showing it strikingly emphasized by the Sun, Mars,
Jupiter, Mercury, and Saturn - all in the ninth house,
suggesting religion. Goethe has recorded his exact hour
- noon - on the authority of his father; so we know that
the 17th degree of Scorpio was rising. Milton was born
"between six and seven in the morning." Our choice here
consequently lies between Scorpio and Sagittarius, and
although his biographer thinks that the "half an hour
after six" mentioned by our contemporary is "probably
correct," the astrologer is impelled to place the event
some minutes earlier; for no gleam of true Sagittarian
sunshine brightens Milton's personality. The prevailing
tone, the characteristic mood and disposition of
Milton's mind, even in early youth, consisted, we are
told, in a deep and habitual seriousness. His striking
qualities were austerity, self-command, and a stoic
scorn for temptation. In his earliest poems he chose
death for his theme, and he took little part in the
amusements of his college companions. The treatment of
his chosen theme, Paradise Lost, is in the true
Scorpionian vein. He gives to Lucifer - the real hero of
the poem - a regal dignity and a tragic beauty, and his
oft-quoted exclamation, "Better to reign in Hell than
serve in Heaven," is echoed by many a son of this sign.
Martin Luther, in his efforts to reform the Church,
swept away the doctrine of purgatory - leaving the
trembling soul to chose between the immediate bliss of
heaven or the horrors of hell; and implying that the
vast majority would be doomed to the latter. Goethe
takes his hero through sin and suffering to regions of
the blessed, and in his also it is the earlier passages
of his poem that are most eagerly and frequently read.
Mephistopheles is a more living and quite as famous a
creation as Faust himself, and one of the poet's
best-known utterances is of the very essence of
Scorpionian philosophy, "Entbehren sollst du; sollst
entbehren" - a line in which the poet tells us that in
this world we must do without - and endure.
It always requires some effort to turn from the pleasant
duty of dwelling on the fine qualities of a sign to the
ungracious labor of cataloging its weaknesses and
defects. All the signs in turn, and often several at
once, bring their various forces to bear upon us, so
that no one can really congratulate himself on being
free from the special failings attributed to any
particular one. Whatever we possess in the way of
self-control and moral backbone - of ability to stand on
our own feet and exercise our own will - we owe to the
power of Scorpio manifesting in us.
Primitive Type
This type never wavers or
wobbles, and whatsoever the Scorpionian's hand finds to
do is done with energy and might. Therefore, when he is
bad he is thoroughly bad. Experiences which arouse in
other types of feelings of mild discontent or
half-formed dislike, awaken his breast anger and
resentment, fierce rebellion, jealousy, and hate. His
passions are stronger than other men's; his courage
never fails him, and his will is iron. If he fails to
find his way to self-mastery, he may make havoc of his
life, developing into the reckless gambler, the
insatiable drinker. Apart from the type of Scorpionian
sketched above, we find many who are undeniably on the
straight road, and yet have a heavier burden of
aggressive and unlovable faults to struggle against. It
is practically impossible for them to take the second
place graciously and contentedly, and their vigilant
outlook makes them abnormally and disagreeably quick in
detecting the backslidings of their fellow creatures. To
discover that others are weaker, more forgetful, or more
self-indulgent than themselves feeds their self-esteem,
and they hail the exposure of failure or lapse with
evident satisfaction that is annoying to witness, and
galling to the victim of the moment. A tendency to enjoy
seeing their friends and intimates waste their time and
energy leads Scorpionian humor to express itself in
practical jokes.
Even Scorpionians of the primitive type are often
attracted to the medical profession, though their
motives for entering it are rather mixed, and frequently
include a morbid desire to know the worst that can be
known of frail and diseased humanity. Drugs, especially
poisons, have a curious fascination for them, and they
are always in favor of drastic treatment.
It is difficult for primitive female specimens born
under this sign to adjust themselves to the conditions
and limitations imposed on them by their sex, especially
in ill-educated communities. They carry out their
allotted tasks carefully enough, working, scrubbing,
scouring, and setting in order with fierce energy, and
are often held up to admiration by outsiders as model
wives and mothers - a verdict which they themselves
heartily endorse. One of the peculiar traits that adds
much to the difficulty of home life under a
Scorpionian's sway is that she - or he - dislikes to
acknowledge any inferiority by asking questions, and,
is, nevertheless, deeply hurt if left in ignorance of
any trivial facts known to other members of the
household.
Physical Characteristics
This type is said to have
a powerful, muscular, and somewhat thickset frame with
dark eyes and strong and rather heavy features.
Scorpionians are generally proud of their command of
feature and immobility of expression. They rarely give
themselves away by flushing, wincing, or starting,
however deeply their emotions may be stirred. Their aim
is to read everybody else like an open book and remain
inscrutable themselves, and their characteristic reserve
and psychic intuition make such an ambition easy of
attainment.
Health
The ideal Scorpionian has
a magnificent physique and phenomenal powers of
endurance, and in consequence is frequently tempted to
defy the laws of health, indulging in prolonged spurts
of excessive work and taking pride in the fact that he
can go on without rest, food, or sleep. But when he is
ill the Scorpionian is thoroughly ill. A rest cure is
the Scorpionian's best remedy, giving the magnificent
power of recuperation always associated with this sign a
chance to assert itself. But he loves heroic remedies
and is seldom content to let well enough alone. In many
cases, he is difficult to nurse, because he knows - or
thinks he knows - just exactly what the nurse ought to
do; and has no hesitation about allowing her to feel
that she has failed in her duty.
SUN IN SCORPIO
The Sun in Scorpio gives a firm, determined, and
reserved individuality, with an inclination to be
dignified, proud, secretive, and full of desire. The
individuality may be either well disposed or selfish,
according to degree of progress. Scorpio is a sign of
strength, independence, and industry.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Aries
This combination gives stubbornness, positiveness,
impulsiveness, and sometimes extremes of anger and
jealousy. It makes a dogmatic, self-assertive character
full of keen likes and dislikes. The passions are often
strong. The native has courage, resolution,
resourcefulness, and independence, and is sure to make
his mark in life in some way. He will probably be known
for his strength of character and will. In most cases he
will be practical and desirous of bringing all theories
to the test of action. The feelings and the intellect
may be well developed. The worst defect is a lack of
calmness or humility.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Taurus
The lunar tendencies here will reduce some of the
positiveness of the Scorpio nature. This combination
makes good medical men with a remarkable intuition
regarding disease. It also suggests success in business,
the nature being firm and determined. In this and other
directions he will have a fixed course of life, and will
persevere in following it out. He will be unchanging and
conservative in most habits and customs, both good and
bad. His domestic and social side is well developed; and
if planetary positions accord, he will develop artistic,
musical, or other cultural interests. He is cheerful,
generally good-natured, and fairly fortunate except when
"cross-aspects" occur.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Gemini
As a rule, the personality is inclined to extremes and
is easily drawn into reckless habits. People born under
this combination are clever and shrewd. They make good
writers and literary critics. They have invention, wit,
pungent sarcasm, and a capacity for sustained
intellectual effort. And they could subsist by
literature, traveling, clerical or scientific work, or
by superintending others in one of these directions.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Cancer
This is a harmonious combination, but those under it are
easily led by others into acts of folly. Early marriage
is recommended, for the powers of attachments are
strong, and the life may be influenced for good. The
native has a rather hard and practical nature in things
that necessitate his going out into the world and mixing
with men, but a kinder and softer side in social matters
or family life. If planetary positions harmonize, he
will cave considerable business ability; will earn or
inherit money or property, and manage it economically.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Leo
This combination inclines the mind to romance, and love
affairs of an intensely passionate and emotional nature
are apt to result. It gives pride, some arrogance, much
love of power, coupled with ardor, imagination, emotion,
energy, and ambition. There is some love of grandeur and
ostentation, and considerable dramatic feeling. The
nature is strong and commanding, firm and self-directed,
even when most emotional. It is well able to influence
others, and to control, direct, and organize.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Virgo
This is the most critical of the twelve lunar positions.
Those born under it are proud, passionate, and liable to
sarcasm and bitter speech. They are apt to criticize
themselves severely and to be dissatisfied with their
own achievements when these fall short of prediction.
They make friends among those in humbler positions, and
are greatly affected through the death of some
particular friend or a subordinate. It is a good
combination for a writer, doctor, chemist, or scientist.
Females make good nurses.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Libra
This combination gives a tendency to "second sight."
There is some inclination toward the mystical, and a
love for all that is psychic, romantic, and wonderful,
under certain planetary influences there will be no
occult ability, but business foresight instead. Under
affliction this position can cause an inharmonious
marriage or in some cases death of the marriage partner.
There is a charitable and benevolent disposition, but
under bad aspects the native may suffer from enmity,
treachery, and deceit. He has a good and well-meaning
nature but sometimes takes the wrong path in life. He is
likely to have many friends and will gain by marriage or
partnership.
Sun and Moon in Scorpio
This combination gives much independence and
self-reliance. Those born under it are inclined to be
materialistic. They have the ability to govern others,
but there is always a tendency to override, domineer,
and master. They are proud and somewhat reserved, yet
have a tendency to inquisitiveness. These
characteristics vary greatly according to the planetary
positions and aspects. If Mars and Saturn are strongest,
the native is capable, practical and unyielding. If
Jupiter or Venus are strongest, he will have a lively
imagination, active emotions, and warm feelings. He
generally has much energy and activity, a capable
executive nature, and in some cases a firm, decided
character with an iron will.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Sagittarius
This combination produces an impulsive and aggressive
nature with a tendency to indiscreet and explosive
speech. Natives have an innate conservatism combined
with progressive ideas. They are busy, practical
workers, enthusiastic and ardent for any cause that
interests them. Their vitality sometimes leads them to
overdo it mentally or physically, and there is terrible
anger on occasion. They follow occupations connected
with religion, make good soldiers or sailors, or have
ability for law or medicine - these tendencies depending
upon planetary positions to bring them into prominence.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Capricorn
This intensifies the pride of Scorpio, and gives strong
inclinations toward self-indulgence. At the same time
there is a great amount of patience, perseverance, and
endurance. The combination is apt to give a rather hard
nature, with self-will and fixedness of opinion and
habit. Natives are somewhat aggressive, alternating at
times between extremes of rashness and caution,
liberality and thrift. Supported by suitable planetary
positions, they may have business and executive ability,
financial acuteness, and prudence in investments or in
buying and selling. Ambition is combined with
determination, and very high attainments are possible.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Aquarius
This combination gives an ability for government jobs
and a tendency to mix in large concerns. There is a love
of external appearances, wealth and grandeur, but also
some love of the occult. It produces liveliness,
acuteness, inventiveness, and originality, which, under
affliction, may become irritability, nervous worry, or
aggressiveness. The native is sometimes opinionated and
dogmatic, lacking pliability and adaptability. He may do
things in his own way or not all, is apt to have keen
likes and dislikes, and makes a faithful friend or an
unchanging enemy. He has natural dramatic power and is
much attached to home life. He has much strength of will
and mental concentration. Death may be comparatively
sudden.
Sun in Scorpio and Moon in Pisces
This combination gives a restless and anxious nature.
The mind is somewhat mathematically inclined, but there
is a tendency toward deception and duplicity. If other
planets permit, the native is affectionate,
warm-hearted, sympathetic, charitable, benevolent. Under
affliction he is apt to be unlucky and constantly
thwarted. There is usually more promise than
performance. He may benefit by children and friends.
This position tends to mysticism and religion. It
increases offspring. There are ambition and difficulty
in rising to his proper sphere.
