The Taurean Type
Evolved Type. The chief characteristic of the
highly developed Taurean is his stability of character
and of purpose. His is the steadfast mind, unshaken in
adversity, and his the power of quiet persistence in the
face of difficulties. He has found his true position in
the center. Identified with the very heart of things, he
refuses to be hustled or frightened or pushed into any
false position, and generally excels in work requiring a
sense of true proportion and a just appreciation of
relative values. He understands the importance of
system, method, and order, enjoys routine and
regularity, and often shows constructive ability,
especially in matters concerning the foundations of
beginnings of enterprise.
He works best when spurred by necessity or when inspired
by the love of others, especially of his wife and
family. In hard circumstances his patience and
perseverance are marvelous. He generally has a horror of
debt, and shows care and prudence in the administration
of affairs. Acting as mainstay or prop in material ways
is peculiarly congenial to him, and consequently the
type makes ideal trustees and guardians - people who
will make large sacrifices of time and energy, rather
than fail those who have confided in them.
Their commercial integrity also fits them for many kinds
of public office. People of this type suit subordinate
positions, junior partnerships, and so forth, generally
preferring to have boundaries and limits set by someone
in supreme authority. Obedience comes easy to them, but
if nagged they make a stand, and their occasional
outbursts of wrath are sufficiently vehement to cause
considerable consternation to those who have aroused
them. Besides excelling in the building up of commercial
or other undertakings, Taureans are very successful in
agricultural pursuits.
The quick recognition of relative and essential values
which shows in people of this sign gives them almost
invariably the delightful gift of humor. Their feet
never lose touch with the solid ground, and they
generally know not only where they stand themselves, but
where other people stand also, so that the claims of the
charlatan and exaggerations of more excitable
individuals merely amuse them. Their laughter has,
however, no touch of malice, and the true Taurean enjoys
a joke against himself as wholeheartedly as any. It is
consequently difficult to ruffle him, and his kindly
tolerance and warmth of heart are calculated to make him
a favorite among friends, many of whom find his
leisurely ways and tranquil presence very soothing.
Primitive Type. The primitive Taurean naturally
prefers to keep his good things to himself, and often by
seeking to save his life loses it; for excess of
vitality stored up, instead of overflowing for the
benefit of others, is a danger to him. He is
self-centered and quite incapable of seeing anyone's
point of view but his own. His steadfast nature and
splendid persistence show as a mulish obstinacy and a
pig-headed determination to hold his own. Tranquility
and restfulness are represented by laziness and sloth,
and the inherent loyalty characteristic of the evolved
type, as well as its strength and solidity of character,
are recognizable only in foolish dislike of change, and
a dogged disinclination to strenuous exertion of any
kind. The primitive Taurean is absurdly over-cautious
and exasperatingly deliberate. His filial devotion to
his Mother Earth and gratitude for her gifts are often
perverted to a gross materialism accompanied by much
self-indulgence. He is never aggressive in battle, and
avoids it if possible, but when pushed to the wall, or
persistently goaded, will sometimes astonish his
opponent by an outburst of fury, quickly succeeded by a
resumption of stolidity. The sense of humor is
conspicuous, and although his joke may take some time in
the making, it is usually a genuine achievement, even if
it is distinguished rather for its breadth than for its
depth.
Love and Friendship. The Taurean shows himself
exceptionally capable of faithful and enduring
friendship and affection. His loyalty lives on in spite
of neglect or rebuff. In both sexes there is a tendency
to fall in love early and keep it up late, and the
devotion of people of this type is almost invariably
offered to living realities, not to ideal or abstract
heroes and heroines. At the primitive stage the nature
is somewhat over-amorous and sensual, and even when well
developed there is enough of the earthy or physical
element about the affection to make the Taurean friend
or lover crave strongly for the physical presence of the
beloved. Any pretext that will give an opportunity for
communication is seized and held onto with dogged
persistence. Trouble and inconvenience and even
absurdity are of no account, if a chance arises to
deliver a note or gift. The onlooker may deride, the
adored one may grow restive and even cross, but the
steady pursuit goes on till it ends either in victory or
defeat. If a rival triumphs, a certain amount of
philosophy comes to the rescue, and the very lovable
humility of the type asserts itself. The disappointment
is accepted without bitterness or resentment, for
Taureans are rarely handicapped by pride and
self-conceit though frequently by shyness and
self-consciousness. If the pursuit is successful, the
marriage goes forward, and the union is generally
satisfactory; for a sense of proportion prevents a
Taurean husband or wife from exacting too much.
Marriage with a primitive Taurean is, however, somewhat
of a trial, and trouble may arise on account of his or
her laziness and self-indulgence. The women make
splendid mothers and welcome their offspring with great
delight, never wearing them out by fussy attentions,
constant supervision, and correction. In the primitive
type physical well-being and comfort are apt to be given
a very high place, and when a life of comparative
idleness and luxury is possible, conditions are not too
closely scanned. A mercenary marriage sometimes suggests
itself to the type as a comfortable solution to many
difficulties.
Religion. The religious tendency of the Taurean
is occasionally conspicuous by its absence; but even in
the most materialistic of the sign, there is always an
inclination to hold settled convictions, one way or
another, rather than to be harassed by difficulties and
doubts. He generally knows what he believes, and
disbelieves, and has no objection to stating it. The
Taurean inclines to accept the teachings of his early
youth; he is averse to change, though tolerant of
development.
Literary Style. The Taurean habit of mind is
contemplative. He is apt to take his time about telling
a story, and to dwell at considerable length on points
which interest him or strike him as important,
especially if they have anything to do with the
foundations of the plot or the essential qualities of
the characters. His sense of proportion, however, keeps
this ruminating tendency in check; and when critically
examined these meditative passages are generally found
to be integral parts of the whole. His attention to
solidity of structure makes for permanence and
durability, and Taurean literary work stands the wear
and tear of time better than most, because it gets down
to bedrock, and is very little affected by passing
fashions.
He has the builder's instinct for what is essential, and
never troubles about decoration till he has his
proportions fixed and his walls fair and square before
him. Consequently the ornament introduced is well
chosen, emphasizing all that is good and permanent in
the structure, and thereby adding greatly to the effect
of the whole. If there is any carelessness it is in the
matter of finish, but even his roughness and lack of
polish are due rather to the material handled than to
want of judgment in the builder.
To the true-born Taurean nothing is common or unclean.
Anything that concerns the ordinary daily life of
working, suffering, slowly evolving humanity seems to
him legitimate and suitable as a subject for literary
treatment. The physical plane is his chosen field of
operations, and he takes it as he finds it. Even when
dealing with the loftiest topics he prefers to show the
higher qualities dramatically, as they work visibly in
human experience. Consequently the parable or allegory
at its best and pithiest may be looked for from writers
with a strong Taurean strain in them. One of the finest
examples in this line is the short meditation in which
Shakespeare's melancholy Jaques tells the forest exiles
in As You Like It,
"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players."
Shakespeare's actual birthday is unknown, but we do know
that the Sun was in Taurus when he was born, and can see
for ourselves how strongly he answered to this
influence.
In Real Life and in Fiction. In fiction, lovable
examples of the Taurean abound. Kent in King Lear is one
of them; and among Shakespeare's women there is Helena,
the amorous heroine of All's Well That Ends Well, who
along with many attractive qualities shows some of that
deliberate disregard of convention which makes one of
the dangers of this sign wherever the passions are
concerned.
The burlesque Taurean is fat, thick-necked, gross, and
overfed-looking, and often has a great love of low
comedy, heartily relishing a joke of considerable
breadth, and delighting the easily tickled by his
grotesque clowning and facial play. Surely Falstaff had
some flavor of the same influence about him, although no
one sign could possibly for all of him!
Physical Characteristics and Health. The Taurean
is said to be well proportioned, usually on a generous
scale. The voice is musical. Dangers to his health are
ignorance, inertia, and self-indulgence, to which may be
added, in the case of primitive Taureans, sensuality,
gluttony, and drunkenness. The natural vitality, always
abundant, should be given out freely and generously for
the pleasure or benefit of others; otherwise it consumes
itself, and morbid conditions rapidly develop. Death in
these circumstances is usually sudden. Of games in early
years the favorite will probably be football, and the
finest and most congenial exercise singing.
SUN IN TAURUS
The Sun in Taurus makes the individual character behind
each lunar expression more firm, plodding, enduring, and
determined; but there will be a tendency to move more
slowly and act more cautiously, quietly, and practically
than when the Sun is in Aries.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Aries
This combination gives a strong personality with a
tendency to be impulsive, headstrong, and dogmatic.
There are considerable amounts of persistence and
exactitude. When those born under this combination make
up their minds to carry out any purpose in life, they
nearly always succeed; but they expect others to conform
to their requirements. They are enterprising,
independent, and fitted for positions of responsibility.
Success in life comes through their energy, the desire
to excel, and their ability to organize.
Sun and Moon in Taurus
This combination is the most solid and practical of
influences. Those born with it are determined and not
easily thwarted. At the same time, they are friendly,
companionable, cheerful and may be musical or artistic;
they possess a great amount of self-control, but are
sometimes too self-contained, reserved, and often
secretive. They are nevertheless remarkably strong
characters, fearless, persistent, hopeful, and can
easily attain success in the financial world.
Sun in Taurus and Moon and Gemini
The restlessness of Gemini is considerably steadied here
by the Taurus quality. There is less diffusion, and more
initiative force. Those under this combination are
inclined to be somewhat selfish and assertive, but the
intellectual tendencies of the Moon in Gemini give them
a command of language and ability to write. While
somewhat unenterprising, the native has a love of the
beautiful in nature and art and good intellectual
abilities.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Cancer
The sensitiveness of Cancer is somewhat accentuated, so
that the emotions are easily upset. This combination
increases timidity and reserve; it also produces
economy. Imagination is keen; there is some tendency to
go to extremes, especially when influenced by others,
and the desire for sensation is increased. On the whole
it is a fortunate combination, offering rewards through
property and inheritance.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Leo
The emotional and sensational nature is much increased
with this combination. There is a tendency to
exaggerate, to go to extremes, also to be easily
influenced in matters connected with speculation and
sensational pleasures. Affections may be easily drawn
into unfortunate channels, and the native often
expresses keen likes and dislikes. He has a good
constitution, sound health, is self-confident and fond
of show; may be popular or cut something of a figure
socially. Care will be necessary to avoid
over-indulgence. The nature is ardent, at times
passionate; there is some poetic ability, the
imagination being vivid.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Virgo
Critical faculties are accentuated by the practical
Taurean nature behind the personality. In all business
pursuits people with this combination are precise,
persistent, and pronounced in their judgments. They have
abilities in several different directions, can manage
more than one type of business, and are eminently
adaptable. While sometimes lacking in enterprise, they
can quickly apply and develop the suggestions of others.
Virgo being the ruler of the business world, the
personality here has the best facilities for expression.
The moral nature is firm. Behind much apparent
pliability there is a fixed determination which brings
success.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Libra
This combination usually causes the personality to
arrive at faulty decisions, often the result of
another's influence. It produces a certain amount of
determination, usually of a stubborn nature. Those born
under this influence are apt to be guided by feelings
rather than reason. They have ability in music or art.
Outwardly they seem to be observant and intellectual,
but at heart are emotional and sensuous. The personality
is generally affable, refined, and polished, but there
is likely to be some jealousy and vindictiveness toward
opponents.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Scorpio
This position gives a certain amount of vanity and
self-esteem. Feelings are strong, yet there is reserve,
a good deal of secretiveness, and a tendency to be
conservative, except when opposed or angered. Jealousy,
pride, and appetites need curbing. Success in life comes
through determination and self-reliance.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Sagittarius
The determination behind the Sagittarius personality
will incline those born under this influence to go to
extremes in all things. It gives a tendency to impulsive
action and hasty speech. There is, however, an interest
in science, and a tendency toward philosophy and
religion. The native is generous, charitable, and
sympathetic, but his aspirations are usually higher than
his inherent abilities, so that promises usually outrun
performance. He is hopeful, optimistic, and of great
vitality, but he wastes energy in fits of overwork,
undertaking more than he can accomplish.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Capricorn
This is a very practical combination characterized by
economy and caution, with an aptitude for making
carefully thought-out plans and schemes, which are
generally carried to a successful issue. The whole
character is independent and determined. Ambitions are
high, but chiefly concerned with conventional ideals.
Those born under this influence are well able to build
up a fortune; they are especially adapted for a public
life and have great ability to organize and carry out
ambitious plans.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Aquarius
This too is a practical combination. Thoroughness and
prudence are combined with honesty of purpose,
sincerity, and refinement. Those born under this
combination are well able to concentrate their thoughts,
and are industrious, persevering, and successful, yet
tend to be reserved and somewhat self-centered. It is
suitable for holding public offices or appointments, for
working through companies, associations, factories, or
large bodies of people, and tolerably good for acquiring
money and possessions.
Sun in Taurus and Moon in Pisces
Those born under this combination are hospitable,
receptive to the wants and requirements of others, kind,
and pliable, and have plenty of friends and
acquaintances. They are fortunate socially, but rather
less so in business or public life. The disposition
inclines toward good living, peace, and harmony.
Prosperity increases later in life.
